We Are Many Festival (Aired Aug 19)

Alix, media and publicity organizer of the We Are Many (WAM) festival joined host Franny in studio today to talk more about this environmental and entertainment event happening at Diefenbaker Park this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Many great musicians will be playing at the event (we featured a song by local artist Jen Lane, who will be playing Saturday night). Bike racks galore and buses costing only $1 are incentives to get there sustainable to learn more about how you can reduce your ecological footprint. Internet consumption Live (August 12)

Live show on internet consumption with Lori, April, and Franny. We chatted about how time is spent online, how targeted advertising on sites like facebook reinforce many gender stereotypes and body insecurities. We explored how men and women spend their time online differently and why. We also played some great music.

A hodge podge of sorts...

This Tuesday April, Franny and I (Lori) shot the shizz in the studio for thirty minutes. Elison Zasko was scheduled to come in for a live interview, but couldn't make it because she was under the weather and resting up for her performance last night. We had a grand old time, and got talking about the Fringe, some personal adventures, and sweet plans.

Some information about the play: Elison Zasko performs "The Sputniks", about a family of Soviet intelligencia, escaping the Iron Curtain, and leaving behind endless Russian line-ups, home-made pickles, and ‘mat’. Bound to homeless travel and looking for a place to call their home, they play chess, eat soup, and bravely carry their tragedies deep inside their suitcases.

This show is well worth seeing. A few of us went last night and I was incredibly impressed with Elison's ability to portray so many different characters so accurately. She was particularly good at distinguishing the characters by using slightly different accents as well as facial expressions and had perfectly natural pauses to transition from character to character. The Sputniks has two shows left, on Friday, August 8th at 2pm, and Saturday, August 9th at 6pm...both on the Back Stage Stage at Persephone Theatre. Go see it!!

In other news...

Myself, along with some lady friends attended "Guitar Camp" on Sunday, August 3rd and it was a great success. We had people from all different skill levels and with varying experience....it was so great to teach each other songs and to practice along side one another. We plan on having a second edition of Guitar Camp (now called "Guitar Strummit") in the next couple of weeks. Please be in touch if you're interested in attending!

April has a splendid idea (well...she has many, but this is just one of them): BOWLING!! April is looking for experienced and dependable bowlers to join her team starting in the fall. I would be in there like a dirty shirt if I was going to be around come fall, but alas, 'tis not the case :( Oh...April I forgot to ask... Does watching "The Big Lebowski" multiple times count as Bowling experience? Let April know if you think you can knock some socks off. Let's go bowling!

Derogatory labels used to describe women LIVE (July 15)

Brenda, Maxine, Lori, Franny and special guest Sharmeen were all there to talk about some derogatory terms used against women such as 'slut,' 'bitch,' and 'cunt.' Where they are coming from, what they mean to us, and how they perpetuate the ideas of patriarchal society.

"When I think of the term "Laundry List", I think about the never ending to do list that I have in my head. There are the regular things, like, eating and sleeping that, although they should be givens, need to be noted, or I could forget. Then there are household things like getting groceries, cooking, cleaning, paying bills, putting out the recycling, feeding the cat, and keeping things in order. Then there is the host of work and school related duties and assignments. I also have friends and family on my list to make sure I still get to spend time with my social groups and maybe remember to call my brother once in a while. Then, there are sections of goals related to the ideal future I want to help create. This section includes things like general self-improvement, encouraging inclusive language, being politically active, fostering sustainable practices, and, oh yeah, scrubbing out patriarchy! This is what laundry list means to me: one more thing on the list of things to do. Sounds kind of tedious, but if it's not written down, it probably won't happen. Being a feminist is about more than what I think or feel, more than getting upset about inequalities and injustices, and more than just talking to my friends who already agree with me. It has to involve some sort of action that incites people to think about the direction our world is headed. It's a form of empowerment. The more we talk about women and women's issues, the less disparity we will see in our society. This is something I'm convinced of. I like to imagine a future where we remeniss about the days when we had to point out and correct societal inequalities based on gender. Although, something tells me that the fight for feminism will never be over.... but hopefully, it will continue to get easier."
